- Visitor Information
Rumour has it that The People's Supermarket fought off Tesco this a site on Lamb's Conduit Street, one of London's most independently spirited neighbourhoods. The sight of a Tesco Metro would have been incredibly incongruous on a semi-pedestrianised street devoid of all major corporations (with the sole exception of the Starbucks on the intersection with Great Ormond Street). The brain-child of celebrity chef Arthur Potts-Dawson and ex-Marks & Spencer executive Kate Wickes-Bull, The People's Supermarket boasts a remarkably simple concept: anyone can shop in the store, but full membership (exchanged for a one-off ?25 payment and four hours per month working in the store) will grant you a 10% discount and a say in how the shop is run. On the shelves you'll find fresh, locally sourced supermarket fare which is both cheap and airfreight free. All profits go back to into the business, community spirit is bolstered and new jobs are created for locals. Everyone's a winner. Except Tesco's?
