One of London's most famous fringe pub theatres, the Old Red Lion Theatre in Islington was founded in 1979 by Charlie Hanson and is a welcome home to various new and experimental dramatic work. They run a 'Pay What You Can Thursdays' programme where, every Thursday, 20 tickets for are available on a first come first served basis, and you pay whatever you can manage. The place is also a popular pub for locals, especially students from the nearby City University. The Old Red Lion Theatre won the Dan Crawford Pub Theatre Award for 2006. Following the success of the original Red Lion the company set up sister pub the New Red Lion in Islington (a ten minute walk away at 271-273 City Road, EC1V 1LA) which opened in October 2010.Opening and closing times for The Old Red Lion Theatre
