Picturehouse Cinemas, who run the popular Greenwich Picturehouse and Clapham Picturehouse opened the Hackney Picturehouse on Mare Street in October 2011 which features the biggest screen in the group. Located in the building which used to house the Ocean nightclub, the Hackney Picturehouse has four state-of-the-art auditoria equipped with comfortable seating and digital, 3D and satellite technology. The three smaller screens each have a distinct shape and atmosphere, dictated by the imaginative conversion of the old building. The street-level cafe-bar, The Kitchen, opens daily and there are free Wi-Fi hotspots and meeting 'cubicles' as well as six small offices at the top of the building, available to new creative businesses for six month lets. One of three bars in the venue, The Hackney Attic, hosts a rich and varied diary of events including live music and comedy nights, workshops, film quiz competitions, short film screenings, and spoken-word and open-mic nights along the same lines as Upstairs At The Ritzy at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton.
