London area of Theatreland guide

What to do and where to stay in London's Theatreland neighbourhood

London's main theatre district contains around 40 stages and is located in the heart of The West End, occupying the space between The Strand to the south, Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the west and Kingsway to the east. A true rival to New York's Broadway, the hallowed boards of London's Theatreland frequently attract key Hollywood players and international stars. Specialising in musicals and comedies, some of Theatreland's longest running shows include The Mousetrap, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in Black and Chicago. The majority of the theatres have a great character and are renowned for their grand neo-classical, Romanesque or Victorian facades and lavish interiors. Key venues include the Lyceum Theatre, the Savoy, the Theatre Royal, the Aldwych and the London Palladium. Although outside the technical boundaries, the Victoria Palace, the Apollo Victoria, the Old Vic and the National Theatre are considered West End venues.
