London area of Hammersmith guide

What to do and where to stay in London's Hammersmith neighbourhood

To the west of Hammersmith runs the river, which is one of the area’s most endearing and popular features. Locals make the most of their proximity to the water: some live on it, others row on it, plenty walk or jog alongside it but for most people the main attraction is the many bars and restaurants that line the riverbank. From the diminutive Dove pub to the superb Riverside Café, in summer, this stretch becomes so crammed with outdoor drinkers it’s hard to resist joining them for some liquid refreshment. The main shopping stretch in Hammersmith, King Street, is not a thing of beauty though does offer some points of interest; bargain hunters come here to worship at the temples of Primark and TK Maxx. But the high street isn’t just good for a quick shopping fix, the Lyric Theatre consistently stages good quality drama and dance productions. If that’s floating your boat, the theatre listings for the Riverside Studios are also worth checking out.
